S/Sgt William F. Tassara attended Eureka High School.S/Sgt Tassara was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Germany on 18 February 1945. The citation reads in part: "In the attack on Hommerdingen, Germany, on 18 February 1945, the advance of S/Sgt Tassara's company was met by such intense enemy artillery and machine gun fire that it was forces to temporarily withdraw. Soon thereafter it was learned that two seriously wounded enlisted men and been left in a field. S/Sgt Tassara, an officer and another enlisted man voluntarily and without regard for personal safety, immediately dashed out from their protected position and rescued the wounded men while continuously under hostile fire."
He was awarded the Bronze Star Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic achievement in Germany on 16 March 1945. The citation reads in part: "On 16 March, S/Sgt Tassara, acting as platoon leader, so skillfully led his men against a heavily fortified woods protecting Weiskirchen, Germany, that the enemy lines were broken and his men entered the town to engage the enemy in a bitter house to house struggle. Continuously exposing himself to enemy fire, he hurled hand grenades and fired all weapons at the enemy until he was mortally wounded while gallantly leading his men."
