Pfc Robert K. Whan attended Culver Stockton College and was a foreman before he enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 23 February 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
