Pfc Leonard Riess was employed at the Red-Top-Brewery before he enlisted in Fort Thomas Newport, Kentucky on 26 April 1944 and was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
