Sgt John W. McKinley worked on a farm before he enlisted at Fort Hayes Culumbus, Ohio on 7 February 1942.

He was killed when he voluntarily hand carried ammunition to a unit in urgent need of supplies.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.

He is remembered at the Grove Cemetery in Kenton, Hardin County, Ohio.
