Pfc John P. Lucas won a scholarship at Yale University while attending Grosse Point High School, from which he graduated in 1940. He left Yale in February 1943 to join the U.S. Army Reserve in New Haven, Connecticut on 25 September 1942.

He was initially reported as missing in action on 30 November 1944 and was declared officially dead one day and one year later.
