Pvt Gilbert Heflin was employed at the South Yards of the Illinois Central Railroad before he enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 25 March 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
