T/Sgt Roland W. James attended high school for four years and was a janitor and sexton before he enlisted in Boston, Massachusetts on 1 March 1941.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.

He is remembered at the Memorial Walk in Chatham, Massachusetts at the Old Atwood House.
