Pfc William D. Smith attended Defiance High School for two years and was a procedure clerk at the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s supermarket.

He enlisted in Toledo, Ohio on 2 February 1943. He was sent overseas on 21 August 1944.

Pfc Smith was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Limey, France.
