T/Sgt John W. Kern attended high school for four years and was a lithographer at the Dando Schaff Company before he enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 21 October 1942.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his stomach.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
