Pvt Russell D. Lyon attended high school for two years and worked on the family farm before he enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 10 May 1944.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.

He is also remembered at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Athol, Smith County, Kansas.
