Sgt Henry F. Czech graduated from Holyoke High School and was a sales clerk at the Paint Supply Company before he joined the National Guard in Holyoke, Massachusetts on 16 January 1941.

He was was hit in the back near the spine by machinegun fire on 25 December 1944. As a result, his left leg and right foot had been paralyzed. In a recent letter, he told his family that his right foot would be all right eventually, but not the left leg. The last letter received by his wife assured her that he was feeling better, although he was very weak. It was dated on 15 January 1945.

His brother Thaddeus served in Iran in a quartermaster unit with the rank of first lieutenant.
