Pfc Paul F. Harnes attended South East Missouri State College and was a bartender at Dee's Place before he enlisted in Fresno, California on 10 October 1942.The Chaplin of his unit wrote the following to his family: "Your son was killed in action on 20 February 1945, in the city of Fraulautern, Germany. He was part of a machine gun squad that was established in the remains of a building in the city. His position sustained a direct hit from a German 120 mm mortar, and he was known to have been killed instantly."
