Sgt Wendell Wolfenbarger attended high school for four years and was employed at the Neosho post office before he enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 2 May 1944. He was sent overseas in October 1944.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for his action in covering the withdrawal of two of his comrades, Morgan and Montgomery.
