Pfc Mac H. Knowles attended high school for four years and was employed at the Steffins Hardware & Implement Company.

He enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana on 22 April 1944. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at Providence College.

Pfc Knowles was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.
