More information

Sgt Clifford I. Yohe attended college for two years and was a shoemaker and shoe repairman before he joined the Regular Army on 6 March 1939.

A comrade of his unit wrote the following to his family: I was with your son on the day he was killed. On 14 February 1945, a combat patrol was sent out into enemy territory. It was composed of volunteers, as it was a hazardous mission. Your son and myself were on the patrol. We had three missions to accomplish. What they were, unfortunately I cannot reveal, but we did accomplish our missions. Before we could regain our respective companies we were ambushed by approximately one company of Germans. There were thirteen of us and over a hundred of them. For three hours we fought a valiant defense against overwhelming odds. Finally, your son and myself tried to hold back the attack of the Germans so that the rest of the patrol might escape. About ten minutes later a burst of machine gun fire hit your son in the chest and killed him instantly. My buddy and your son was dead.
