S/Sgt Joseph F. Mackin graduated from Mount St. Joseph High School and attended John Hopkins University. He was employed at the Gas and Electric Company before he enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland on 6 February 1943. He was following an ASTP course at Vanderbilt University when he was transferred to the infantry.He was directing 2nd platoon troops out on the west flank when he was killed instantly by small arms fire.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
