Pvt Gouverneur M. Carnochan Jr. graduated from the Loomis School and attended Harvard University for three years. He was a descendant of Lewis Morris, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 27 June 1942 and was sent overseas in October 1944.

He died by small arms fire.

Pvt Carnochan was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
