Pvt Donald C. Barber graduated from Central High School and was employed at Ansco and was a frequent prize-winner for improvement suggestions at the film plant.

He enlisted in Binghamton, New York on 26 November 1943.

After his enlistment he served as a photographic laboratory technician at Sedalia Field, Missouri. He was transferred to the infantry in January 1945 and assigned to Camp Gordon, Georgia for basic training before being sent overseas in late February or early March 1945.

In letters dated 8 April 1945 he wrote that he had lived in foxholes for four weeks, but added that he had just enjoyed a turkey dinner in a newly captured town.

Pvt Barber was killed in action just four days after his second child was born. He died without knowing of the birth of his daughter Anita on 11 April 1945. The soldier also was the father of a 2 year old son, Donald Jr.
