Pfc William Bednar graduated from Whiting High School.

He enlisted in Indianapolis, Indiana on 13 July 1943 and trained with the infantry at Camp Wheeler in Georgia and in Louisville Kentucky. He was sent into combat in September of 1944.

Pfc Bednar had previously been wounded in the Hürtgen Forest in November 1944 and returned to combat after his release from a base hospital.
