Charles enlisted in the Army on 13 April 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He died of wounds in a German prison camp where he had been held since 28 December 1944. A Washington High School graduate, he was employed at the Sherelis' Coal & Coke Company before he entered the service. He went overseas in December, 1944 with an infantry unit of the First Army. He was listed as missing in action in Belgium in December and reported a prisoner in April.
