Sgt Frank E. Smith graduated from Hanover township High School and worked for the Kellog Company.

He enlisted at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 20 August 1942. He was first trained as a paratrooper at Fort Benning, Georgia but was later transferred to the infantry.
