S/Sgt Samuel L. Kessler graduated from Withrow High School in 1936 and attended two years of college and was a salesman.

He enlisted at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on 7 March 1941. He was wounded at in North Africa where he earned his first Purple Heart.
Both his parents were born in Russia.
