More information

Pvt Kermit E. Sargent enlisted in Abingdon, Virginia on 7 December 1942.

Kermit E. Sargent was reported seriously wounded in action on 29 November 1944. He was brought to a German aid station in a farm, but he died shortly after. He was then hastily buried by German paratrooper Wilhelm Kleiner in a shell-hole behind the farm.

He was officially declared death one year and one day after he was reported missing in action.

His remains were found in 1972 and reburied at the cemetery of Merode along with his former German paratrooper opponents. It is not yet clear if U.S. authorities will exhume his remains for identification and reburial.
