Staff Sergeant Dinneen volunteered for army on 18 October 1935.
The citation for his Bronze Star reads as follows: 'By direction of the president, the Bronze Star medal is posthumously awarded to Staff Sergeant Walter J. Dinneen, infantry, for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations from November 9, 1942 to May 12, 1943. The courage, initiative and fidelity with which Sergeant Dinneen performed his duties as assistant gunner of a heavy machinegun squad contributed materially to the battlefield efficiency of his company during the North African campaign'.
Walter Dinneen served in also Sicily. His brother Technical Sergeant Rodney L. Dinneen was killed on August 7, 1943 in the Southwest Pacific area. He is buried at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii.
