More information
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal. The citation cited: For gallantry in action in the vicinity of Le Bourge, Normandy, France 27 June 1944. Although constantly shelled by enemy artillery and mortars, he, unmindful of personal safety, cleared a wide path through a densely sown mine field, thereby greatly accelerating the advance of infantry assault units. His gallantry and devotion to duty exemplify the finest traditions of the service. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For heroic achievement in connection with military operation against the enemy in Germany on 30 November 1944. Headquarters 1st Infantry Division. At the time of his death, he was working with several others digging a safe hole for the regimental command post, when suddenly a german mortar shell landed in the hole they were digging. He was hit by the fragments of the shell and was immediately evacuated by the aid men but quietly slipped into eternity while at the aid station.
