Cpl John E. Raftery Jr. attended one year of college education and later on worked as an unskilled laborer in the automobiles manufacture industry.

enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 11 August 1942.

On 20 October 1944 Cpl Raftery was reported wounded in action in the western outskirts of Aachen and was transported to a Belgian hospital. On 2 November 1944, he died of his wounds. Cpl Raftery's wife, Juanita, had a memorial service arranged for her husband in the hospital where he died.
