Pvt Melvin W. Baker enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 6 April 1944. He was formerly employed with Burlington Mills before he enlisted.

He received his basic training in the infantry at Fort McClellan, Alabama and after an 11-day furlough with his wife and their daughter, reported to Fort Meade in Maryland.
