S/Sgt Walter L. Sak enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 29 October 1941.

He attended high school for 2 years and was a metalgrinder before he enlisted. He took part in all the campaigns of his unit, starting with the invasion of North Africa and Sicily, the landing on Omaha Beach at D-Day and the advance to the Siegfried Line.
