His father immigrated from Russia in 1905. He died in 1917.In 1924, his mother with her four children started A. Berry, a clothing store in honor of Abraham. The store soon became a prominent establishment in the city of Columbia, which Jake Berry became General Manager of upon graduation from Columbia High School.
He enlisted at Fort Jackson, Colombia, South Carolina on 16 October 1942.
