Pfc Robert M. Engle enlisted at Camp Blanding, Florida on 9 March 1943. He joined his unit from the 41st Replacement Battalion on 19 July 1944.

He was wounded in action on 7 August 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He returned to his unit on 21 August 1944. He was again wounded in action on 4 December 1944.
