2nd Lt Gaetano aka Kitan A. Agostinelli graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford and Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and enterred the University of Maine. He withdrew from the univeristy to volunteer for the Army of the United States on 4 March 1943. He received his basic training at Fort Eustis, Viriginia where he was promoted to corporal. Graduated from Officers Candidate School in Camp Davis, North Carolina in January 1944, he reported for duty at Camp Stewart, Georgia. From there he was transferred to the infantry in February 1944 and underwent an intensive eight-week course in infantry tactics at Fort Benning, Georgia. At completion, he was assigned to Camp Blanding, Florida in April 1944. From there he was transferred to Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland in October 1944 to take a month's course in chemical warefare which qualified him to be Regimental Gas Officer. He returned to Camp Balnding as an instructor until ordered overseas in January 1945.

Both his parents were born in Italy.
