Pvt Richard E. Hughes graduated from Hoagland High School and was employed by the Fort Wayne Drug Company.He enlisted at Camp Perry Lacarne, Ohio on 22 March 1943. He was sent overseas in May 1944.
He joined his unit from the 48th Replacement Battalion on 7 July 1944.
He was lightly wounded in action on 8 August 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal the first time.
His brother Charles also served during WWII.
