Pfc John C. Mc Carthy was graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit.

He was reported severely wounded in action on 15 July 1944 and transferred to the 96th Evacuation Hospital. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. After recovering he returned to his unit.
