Pfc Kafka attended Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois.He joined his unit on 23 July 1944 and he was severely wounded in action on 27 July 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He rejoined his unit on 13 August 1944.
