Pfc William H. Guterding attended high school for three years.

He enlisted in New York City, New York on 11 February 1943.

He was severely wounded on 7 July 1944 and transferred to the 34th Evacuation Hospital. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart a first time. After recovering he rejoined his unit.
