Eugene Pientka graduated from St. Mary Magdalene and Bowen High Schools. He was employed at the Fernwood food & liquor store.

He enlisted in August 1943 and was sent overseas in April 1944. He received his training at Camp van Dorn, Mississippi and Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky.

On 18 July 1944 he was lightly wounded in action in St. Lo, France and transferred to the 104th Evacuation Hospital, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. He rejoined his unit from the 79th Replacement Battalion on 4 December 1944.
