Pfc George W. O'Neal enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 3 October 1942.He was reported severely wounded in action on 7 July and transferred to the 128th Evacuation Hospital, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time. After recovery he rejoined his unit.
