Sgt J. W. Gulledge attended high school for one year and worked on a farm before he enlisted at Camp Shelby, Mississippi on November 4,1942.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden. France.
