Sgt Roy E. Simcox Jr. was employed by the Piper Aircraft Corporation before he enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 22 June 1942. He was sent overseas in April 1944.

He was struck by a fragment of an artillery shell as he and 15 other infantrymen were gathered in a hall after a night on the field.
