Pfc Merrell W. Hancock attended high school for one year and was a stock clerk at the Gribbs Grocery before he enlisted at Fort McPherson, Georgia on 14 August 1943.

He was killed by artillery shell fragments in his buttock and hip.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Andilly, France.
