More information

Pfc Clifton W. Atwood enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 18 June 1942.
His company commanding, Captain E. L. Halliburton, wrote a letter to his brother, explaining what happened on that tragic day: On 1 December 1944, the company of which your brother was a member was taking part in the attack on the enemy held city of Haguenau, France. Before reaching this city there was a dense forest that had to be taken from the enemy and it was being heavily defended. It was during this attack by our forces, which eventually liberated the city of Haguenau, that Clifton was hit and instantly killed by enemy machine gun fire. A medical aid man rushed to his assistance when he was hit but Clifton was dead when the aid man reached him.
The men of Cliftons company immediately took his body to the rear to be prepared for burial in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Epinal, France.
