Pfc La Verne A. Bertels attended Lorin Andrews Junior High School and was employed as a fireman for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad at Brewster.He enlisted on 24 April 1942 and was sent overseas in December 1944.
He was first buried at Margraten in a temporary grave on 25 March 1945. He was disinterred on 22 July 1948 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 28 July 1948. He was given his final resting place on 21 December 1948.
His father was born in Lorraine, France.
