S/Sgt Laverne F. Lowe graduated from Northfield High School in 1943 and briefly attended St. Olaf College. He was a very good student and athlete in high school, playing end on the Big 9 Conference Football Championship team in 1942 and was also an outstanding hurdler on the track team. He planned to become a medical doctor after his schooling was complete.He enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota in September 1943 and was selected fot the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). After basic training, he was to return to college and then on to medical school. Mounting casualties in the Pacific and European theaters caused the Army to end the program in February 1944 and ASTP soldiers were assigned to infantry units.
He arrived in Europe in July 1944 and was assigned to his unit in August.
