Pfc David A. Hedland was married to Bernice Stevens on 23 October 1933. Four children were born to them, one of whom, Betty Ann, died in infancy.After finishing school he worked as a farmer until in 1939 whe he moved to Englovale, North Dakota where he operated a cafe. In the spring of 1942 he went to Los Angeles where he was engaged in defense work until he enlisted in Los Angeles, California on 22 December 1943. He trained at Camp Fannin, Texas, Camp Van Dorn, Missouri and Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
