Pvt Richard W. Cunningham enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 23 June 1941.He was only 16 years old, but felt it was his duty to serve.
His father died a hero, as a Coast Guardsman, while helping to rescue stranded fishermen in Lake Michigan in 1936.
