1st Lt James L. Helms joined the Regular Army as a private on 5 August 1940. He spent 2 years in the Panama Canal Zone and was later sent overseas.

He had set up a forward observation post in order that he could direct the cannon fire in support of his rifle company which was attacking the town. He was killed instantly by machine gun fire from a tank.
