His commanding offiers, Col R. A. Baker recalled what happened: "Pfc Theodore J. Nega's unit was in the attack and he had been in the basement of a house in Oerlinghausen, Germany. He came up from the basement and was killed instantly when he was caught by the rifle fire of an enemy sniper.
