Capt Buford C. Toler was hit by enemy machine gun fire just after crossing the Roer River during the attack on Altenburg.He died of his wounds four days later.
Capt Toler had been wounded in action twice before. He received shrapnel wounds from an exploding bomb and later was shot in the foot by a sniper. Both times he was evacuated to England for treatment.
