More information

Pfc Raymond P. Sumpter joined the National Guard in Wichita, Kansas on 23 December 1940. His family believes he lied about his age.

He was guarding a work detail of German prisoners when he was overpowered and struck on the head. While en route to take to him to a hospital for treatment, the Germans transporting him were fearing reprisals from the American authorities for injuring an American soldier, and they decided to kill him and bury him instead.
