Pvt Leland C. Heller was a chauffeur before he volunteered for the Army of the United States at Camp Grant, Illinois on 21 July 1942. He was sent overseas on 1 June 1943.Pvt Leland Heller was a veteran of the Italian and Sicily campaigns before taking part in the D-day operations.
He was hospitalized for several weeks after being wounded in the battle of Salerno, Italy and then was transferred to England
